“…the energy was so electric…. Filled with deliciously sexy moments, a well written script with nice clean direction by Andrew Shaver.” Mooney On TheatreClick for full review.

“It’s quite a coup for the three indie companies to produce this world premiere of A Woman is a Secret. That they are so well produced and acted is a bonus…. Andrew Shaver has directed each play with wit, humour, whimsy and subtlety… The whole evening is full of wonderful acting.” The Slotkin Letter. “… each of the pieces in A Woman Is a Secret is an achievement, and collectively they are a triumph…  Insightful, soulful, funny and heartening, all in one sitting. Shanley dares us to love more courageously, more perceptively, and more extravagantly. There are too many good things to say about this satisfying, multifaceted collection of plays. You just have to see it for yourself.” Evan Andrew Mackay, Post City. Click for full review.

“Shaver’s production is certainly smooth – and the acting is often sharp, with a nice mix of newcomers and veterans. Shanley’s writing… does strike a chord deep within – and the ex-Marine’s rough, romantic streak that has won over audiences for three decades is in full evidence here.” The Globe and Mail.

“I’m either appalled or charmed (by watching my work on stage). I was charmed… Last night I refound the innocence of theatre in the beauty of this production.” Playwright John Patrick Shanley.  Listen to his interview on CBC Radio Q: Click for full interview.

From the Oscar, Tony, and Pulitzer-winning writer John Patrick Shanley, known for such modern classics as Doubt, Moonstruck and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, comes this soirée of new short plays about love, lust and longing, featuring live music by Juno-nominated singer/songwriter Matthew Barber.

A WOMAN IS A SECRET uses a cabaret-like structure to tell our story through both plays and old-fashioned love songs. This is playwright John Patrick Shanley at his most playful and idiosyncratic: Small town oracles who foretell the future, curses of desire and destruction, women haunted by the memory of those they have lost, and men tempted by the promise of those they might possess, Shanley’s newest collection is filled with the kind of soaring intensity and outlandish humour we have come to expect from this most romantic of American playwrights.

Starring an ensemble of some of Canada’s favourite actors, including Martha Burns, Noah Reid, Jonathan Higgins, Anna Hardwick, Jade Hassouné, Karen Knox, Tony Nappo, Molly Flood, Trent Pardy, Katie Swift and Anand Rajaram, and helmed by two-time META Award-Winning director Andrew ShaverA WOMAN IS A SECRET will be an intimate evening of theatre and music to arouse the mind and tear at the heart.

Rip Jaw Productions was formed out of a desire to harness and unite the indie theatre talent in this city. We are about community: making something that’s larger than the sum of our parts. We are about collaborating: joining with emerging artists to mount world-class theatre events. We are outward-looking: bringing great material from afar and adding a uniquely local twist. Officially, we create boundary-pushing theatre in immersive environments. Unofficially, we were named by an eight-year-old boy, and we are driven by a passion to tell stories that are full of heart. We are honoured to present this world premiere by John Patrick Shanley right here in Toronto.
